Back when most were spending their time drinking and looking for projects to take up at home during the COVID-19 quarantine, A-Trak remembered a broken E-Mu SP1200 that he’d been meaning to fix.

With touring at a complete halt and more time on his hands than he’d had in years, A-Trak took the time to fix up the drum machine. Then, he sat down and got to work on some new singles.

The resulting 10 Seconds Vol. 1 EP finds A-Trak nodding to the producers who’ve inspired him over the years: Pete Rock, Madlib, DJ Muggs, Kenny Dope, Todd Terry, Alan Braxe, and DJ Falcon. The 12-bit sound filled with grit weaves its way through each single, stamped with the E-Mu SP1200.

Kicking off with “Spit,” A-Trak’s EP transports listeners back into pulsing clubs as daylight creeps up. “Bubble Guts” follows as the 10 Seconds Vol. 1‘s second track, continuing his exploration into house-riddled territory.

“Sling Shot” propels the second half of the EP, bringing forth a rawer energy and jittering tones. “Bee Bop” continues on that more experimental style, with elements of house throbbing through. Soft vocals float over the pulsing instrumentals, horns accenting the track.

Perfect for the Chicago hot spots of the 1980’s, or for those moments trapped at home with nothing else to do, 10 Second Vol. 1 provides release not just for A-Trak himself, but also his audience. Vol. 2 of A-Trak’s 12-bit sound is promised, though a formal release date has yet to be announced. For now, fans can spend their time transporting back in time, if only for 15 minutes.
