Piero Pirupa adds another brick to the wall with ‘We Don’t Need’

When Pink Floyd released their single “Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2” back in 1979, the track kicked off the rollout for their rock opera, The Wall. Arriving as the band’s first single since “Point Me At The Sky” in 1968 and ushering in the new sound of ’80s progressive rock, “Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2” protested against corporal punishment while carrying disco elements.

The track currently sits at No. 384 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time, and Pink Floyd has let the track’s infamous sample be used on rare occasions.

It’s taken another decade for the band to grant permission for the song to be used, and in Piero Pirupa‘s new single, “We Don’t Need,” sees Roger Waters‘ vocals can be heard floating through the deep cut; “We don’t need no education, we don’t need no thought control.”

The single maintains the genius captured in Pink Floyd’s original, with light touches from Pirupa. Tech-house grooves bounce through the choir’s chorus, “No dark thoughts in the classroom/Teacher leave us kids alone.”

The ID version of Pirupa’s latest first surfaced at Burning Man 2020, and has since appeared in sets from Carl Cox, John Summit, and more. With the band’s official stamp of approval, the new single carries the magic of the original while fitting it neatly in a dance floor environment.

Although The Wall‘s original theme followed the fictional rockstar Pink and his self-imposed isolation that formed a figurative wall after the death of his father in World War II, much of the record’s messages remain timely in today’s political climate.

In 2007, Pink Floyd had approved the sample to be used in Eric Prydz‘s “Proper Education,” with the band credited on the release as “Floyd.” Pirupa also has experience sampling classics; last year saw the release of Rozalla’s “Everybody’s Free To Feel Good.”
