In contrast and dichotomy, SG Lewis finds the sounds of his second studio album, AudioLust & HigherLove. The LP, due January 27, 2023 via Astralwerks, is conceptually “split into two worlds.” “AudioLust is the darker, lusty, infatuated, short-lived, and ego-driven version of love,” he says. “The second half represents a much deeper, actualized, and fulfilled version of love.”

The follow-up to Lewis’ debut album times—named Dancing Astronaut‘s 2021 Album of the Year—will serve as a study on love and its dimensions. Sometimes it’s chimeric and sometimes, it really hooks us; Lewis explored these parts on “Missing You / Something About Your Love,” a double A-side single released ahead of AudioLust & HigherLove‘s announcement. On “Vibe Like This / Infatuation,” the second twofer of the rollout, Lewis lyrically courts the attraction, the enamor, and the downright obsession that can come with both types of love. “Vibe Like This,” a viscous outing made in tandem with Ty Dolla $ign and Lucky Daye, feels like an offshoot of Funk Wav sound that’s individualized by Lewis’ own slinky and soulful idiosyncrasies. “Infatuation” cranks up the “I want you” dial, candidly and unabashedly yearning for the object of affection. It’s worth noting that three of the four album singles have used Lewis’ own vocals, and press surrounding the forthcoming project promises that his voice will be featured “more prominently than ever before.”

From its concept to its sound, AudioLust & HigherLove supports Lewis’ feeling that he “exists in the space between DJing and being an artist,” and at this point, it’s no secret that he toggles between both modes with dexterity. But this LP is born from both the sensibilities and abilities of each, and in making it, Lewis artistically stretched his legs and stepped outside his creative comfort zone. “The bulk of the album was written across a series of intensive studio residencies in the height of the pandemic, with the help of some incredibly talented friends, and allowed me to explore myself as an artist in a way that I would never have dared before,” he explains. We’re damn glad he did.
